Karl Llorca

RSLI, MVLP, A1 Assessor, PG Dip, BA (Hons)

I did not start out my professional career wanting to be a BSL Interpreter, I got hooked on the language by seeing an interpreter working on stage at an event. I enrolled on my BSL Level 1 the very next month at the local college. Still not thinking about sign language as a career I was just in love with the language and the community. I started to work in the deaf community just before I passed my level 2 in BSL and worked as a PCA for a few years before joining the interpreting team and going back to University to study my Postgraduate in BSL/English Interpreting.

I have been very fortunate to work all over the world as a BSL/English Interpreter. My main specialisms are performance interpreting; TV, theatre’s, arenas and festivals and also Forensic Deaf Mental Health (due to my degree being Psychology based). I have been the National Vice Chair of ASLI and have also served on the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters’ Board as Membership Secretary.

My passion now is about giving back to those who are just starting on their journey towards qualification, hoping to impart the knowledge my 20 years in the field has allowed me to accrue.
