Qualification aim

Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL) caters for the learning needs of those who already have competence in BSL at Level 2. Successful learners must be able to demonstrate competence at Level 3 of the UK Occupational Language Standards (CILT, 2010).

Objectives

You will develop the ability to:

• demonstrate BSL competence at an advanced level;
• broaden and apply BSL skills required in a range of situations and contexts;
• demonstrate an understanding of BSL from a variety of registers in different situations with different people;
• communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in BSL using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language;
• demonstrate increased knowledge of the grammatical structure and variation within BSL;
• demonstrate positive attitudes and sensitivity to language and language learning;
• demonstrate insights into and contact with the Deaf community.

Unit structure

The qualification is divided into three units each of which will be assessed separately. Candidates must pass all three to successfully complete the course.

Course structure

Level 3 is split into three units:

• 320 – Linguistics
• 321 – Receptive
• 322 – Productive

You will be guided through each unit at a steady pace with work set both inside and outside of the classroom.

Prerequisites

You must be familiar with the Signature Level 2 BSL curriculum and you should hold a Signature Level 2 BSL Certificate.

Progression

You may progress to Signature Level 4 NVQ Certificate in BSL and from there to Signature Level 6 NVQ Certificate in BSL. If you have the Signature Level 3 Certificate in BSL qualification, you will have increased opportunities to obtain voluntary work or paid work with deaf children in schools/youth clubs or with deaf people in education, social work, mental health, etc.
